Now What?

Yesterday I received in the mail a generously sized swatch that I had previously submitted to a publication. This original swatch was done using a cotton/wool/silk blend, DK weight yarn from Farmhouse Yarns. I had known for some time that my submission was rejected and I was also aware that they would return my swatch. But, now that it is here, I kind of feel like now what?

My original idea for the swatch was to make a nice, lightweight, scarf out of these hexagonal motifs. It would be three motifs wide and about 14 or 15 motifs in length. I had also ruminated over the idea of making it a shawl or wrap.  I really liked how the motif worked up and I also liked the idea of a slightly variegated yarn (you can see in the pictures that it changes from a pinkish/orange to orange with flecks of white).  Perhaps though, this isn't the right yarn for the project. Do the color changes take away from the motif design?  Originally, I had thought that it was a simple enough design that the yarn would enhance it but now I'm not so sure.

So I'm asking for a little help here. Should I continue with this project (using this yarn) and still write up the pattern? Or should I try using a different solid or semi-solid yarn for this motif? Should I just scratch the project all together?

And if I decide to forget about it, what do I do with a swatch this size?

  2. So I don't know what it is but I like these little hexagons. I'm not sure what you should do with them.

  3. I love the look of the hexagons with the yarn but I don't know if I would buy the pattern because I feel like it's the yarn that makes this so great. If I were you, I'd finish the scarf because I think it will be beautiful, but I wouldn't write the pattern up because it seems too familiar and simple.

  4. I agree with Andi Pants - you should finish the scarf - I think the yarn in those colors makes lovely hexagons! (not commenting about the "writing up the pattern" part because I don't crochet :-)

  5. I think that colorway is just perfect for the level of complexity and openness in the motif. The stitches show well, and the colorplay is interesting, not distracting.

  6. I like the yarn in this pattern. If you were thinking another yarn might enhance the design more, maybe you could do a swatch in it to compare? Personally, I like the way there's the hexagonal detail but also the kind of undulating variation in the yarn colour.

  7. I would stop here and stitch your hexagons together. Then I'd tack it down to white cotton and make a throw pillow out of it. The openness and structure of it, along with the yarn would make it a shame to crunch it up around your neck.

    Or make a shawl. :)

  8. I like Devona's idea of a pillow, or maybe a wall hanging could be made. I really like the hexagons, and I love the yarn. Fredericaknits' suggestion of another swatch might help you answer the question of continuing wth the pattern.

  11. yes, write it up. I like the yarn - the color variations give it a great deal of depth. And the design is just lovely.

If you end up not using it, you should back it with fabric and sew it into (onto?) a pillow.

Or not. Either way, I like it.
    Cheers!

  12. I love variegated yarns. I think it looks great. You should make your own decision, but I can picture it as a very lovely scarf. I'd roll on, girl! :-) And if not, it looks like a nice doilie. ;-)

Thanks also for the comment on my blog. I'm glad to have found yours this way!

  14. I love it. May be a light shawl. Because I think the hexagon would not be seen when you use it as a scarf.

  15. By the way...I would love you to write up the pattern. It may be simple for others. I however, have no idea.
