Garter Stitch Eternity Scarf

This kind of scarf/cowl has been in the back of my mind since the fall when many stores began debuting their fall lines. It seemed everywhere I went there were these lovely, chunky cowls in a simple textured stitch. Being the knitter I am, I would stop and admire/investigate each one thinking, "I could totally make one of these". While lovely, they always tended to be knit in some kind of acrylic or acrylic blend yarn. In my mind I was imagining one knit in a yarn similar to that of my favorite scarf. I finally got my act together a couple weeks ago and did a quick gauge swatch and then knit this cowl up. It is so warm and cozy, the must have kind of accessory if you live in a cold weather climate.

You can wear this a couple of ways: long and loose (as seen in the top photo), kind of tucked into your coat like a real scarf; wrapped double into a cushy cowl; or folded in half, one end pulled through the other. I'm favoring the second and third option since I prefer my scarf to be wrapped up as close to my face as possible.

For this scarf I used over two hanks of Misti Alpaca Chunky but you could probably get away with two if you cast on fewer stitches.

  7. Really nice! I think often the simplest things are the loveliest, and my favorite to knit (& the ones that get worn the most, ultimately). Also, I'm going to make myself sound dumb, but it never occurred to me that you could pull an eternity scarf through its own loop like that -- thanks for the inspiration!

  10. I am a huge fan of this scarf! I really like the pattern, it's not too fussy, but beautiful and feminine at the same time!
Doing this in a mohair yarn would be soo pretty for the summer or over a little black dress, maybe little less wide and long..
Anyways, It's very nice, thanks for sharing the pattern!

    1. I have to be honest, I really wouldn't recommend doing this flat. You'd have to cast on 168 sts and then work back and forth, working the garter sections as knit every row and the stockinette sections as knit a row, purl a row. Then seam up the short side. I'd imagine this might be too bulky and heavy to do flat. Either way, good luck!

  16. Love this and want to make it right NOW but I can't find 40" circular needles, only 29" - will that work or am I going to run out of space?

  17. I am about 15 rows into this and am using 29" circulars. It is bulky and a little squished but seems to be working fine.

  21. Beautiful cowl. There has been a discussion on Knitting Paradise regarding the directions...(p1 row, k1 row) repeat 6 times. Are there 6 repeats plus the original to equal 7 repeats or just six repeats ? Small question which is generating a big discussion. Thanks.

  22. I don't understand purl 1st stitch after the cast on.

  23. Has anyone tried making this with just two hanks? If so, how many stitches did you cast on?

  24. Can this be made as a true infinity scarf by using a provisional cast on and then joining with Kitchener stitch?
