Issues

I'm having some baby knitting issues this week. On Sunday, I cast on for my second Baby Sophisticate in the smaller, 0-3 month size. I didn't get gauge on the needles I was using so I tried to adjust the pattern accordingly. However, I started to realize that on the needles I was using and with the size it was making, I would run out of yarn. So I frogged. I cast on again, this time with the appropriate size needles to gauge and worked the pattern as written. Then last night I decided to measure the approximate chest size.

Approximately 7.5" wide. Pattern calls for finished chest circumference of 16".

So now my question is, will this actually fit a newborn? Having never had a newborn, I'm wondering if this is going to actually fit the intended child. The baby is born in December, close to Christmas, and will need to wear the sweater pretty much immediately and for the next two months or so (true winter weather is pretty short and fleeting in the Central Valley of California).

Additionally, I went button shopping for this sweater Monday night and for the life of me, could not make up my mind. I've chosen three buttons I liked and can't really decide on which will look best.

Button #1: Cute. But too plain?

Button #2: Perhaps just a smidge too orange?

Button #3: I like these the best but are they too dark?

Any thoughts?

  1. I like the pine cone one too but wonder if it's suitable for a baby sweater in that the odd-shaped buttons can be a pain to do up on a squiggly baby. My other choice would be the top one. I love your yarn choice!

  4. I prefer the first button. I'd think the baby might have the opportunity it hurt himself on the pine cone, cute though it is.

  5. I have never knit for a newborn so I can not help you out there. I definitely like the first button the best. It really compliments the green of the sweater. The pine cone is equally nice, but I agree it's a bit too dark for that yarn.

  6. Considering the fact that after seaming, your sweater will be approximately 1.25" short of 16", I would say that it may fit right out of the womb, depending on the size of the baby. Babies grow so fast, there may not be another wear out of it.

    I vote for button #3!!

  7. Depending on the size of the newborn I'd say they would be able to wear the sweater. And for how long? again depends on how big the baby is at birth. My granddaughter is 9 mo old and is wearing 12 mo size.
    I like the second button.

  9. I really love number one! The wood-colour with that turqoise/petrol yarn looks really nice.

  12. I vote for the pine cone buttons...darling!!

Next, sorry but I don't think that you'll like what I'm going to say. I never knit a new baby ANYTHING in less than a 6-9 month size. They grow to fast, AND babies in our family are not petite - they usually start out as 9 pounders!

  13. Just my opinion about the buttons :) I like #1 best, and agree that sometimes shaped buttons are difficult to button.

  15. I really like the first one. I think simplicity works nicely with babies! But I reckon any of them would be lovely and oh so cute ; )
