Sizing Trouble

I knit and knit and knit away on my Audrey in Unst cardigan last night, even stayed up past my bedtime, just so I could bind off on the shoulders. I bound off, got out of bed and tried it on. And what do you know? It seems awful tight. Like, might-be-too-small awful tight. Like, I-should've-knit-the-next-size-up awful tight. It was too late for me to feel overly anguished, so I just went to bed.

I woke up thinking that since this is superwash wool, there is the possibility of it stretching. After all, I did wash and block my swatch. The pattern calls for 0-1" of negative ease. Last night it seemed a bit more than that. I'm not sure what's more disappointing: the idea of having to rip out the entire body and reknit or the fact that I was already imagining myself wearing it next week. I'm in the process of washing it right now and then am going to block it out and see what happens before I do anything drastic. I may be starting those socks sooner than I anticipated.

  3. ugh, frustrating! I hope the blocking helps. I have a very hard time getting the proper fit in a sweater. I hope it works out, Andrea! The color is amazing.

  4. Sure hope it stretches out. This is one of those aituations where someone I ususally love says something like "Starting over and getting it right builds character!" and I suddenly don't love them quite as much.

  5. oh man, i hope you can block it out! when that happens to me, i never have the will to reknit. i either keep it and say i will and never do, or i give it away to someone who fits it and then feel a bit sad every time i see them wear it.

  9. Good luck with the blocking! I don't really knit but I know the frustration of working on something for so long and then facing the possiblity of it not fitting.

  14. oh no!! I have a friend who knitted this and had the same trouble- it's a small sweater, that's for sure. Hopefully a really aggressive wet blocking will get you the size you need!
