Knitting Ennui

tap tap tap Is this thing on?

In case you couldn't tell, I've been in the midst of a knitting ennui. I spent quite a bit of time today running through my queue and stash today trying to think of the possibilities but it's like there's nothing out there to excite me right now. Mary and I even made a special afternoon trip to a great yarn store where I came back, wait for it, empty handed. I know, I know. The highlight of my afternoon was the awesome grilled cheese sandwich I had for lunch when we made a stop at a place called Melt Bar and Grilled. There are three locations and they're pretty much always busy but if you're ever in the Cleveland area, even if it's just for the afternoon, this place is a must go.

When I try to tell people that this place serves gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches I always get a kind of "um... ok." Just trust me though, you really have to experience it.

Back to the yarn. I've still been working on my Audrey in Unst cardigan, albeit very, very slowly. But when you're only in it half-heartedly you do dumb things. For example, I realized recently that the interchangeable needles I was using on the sleeve might actually be two different sizes. After about two weeks, I finally pulled out the sweater and needle gauge thingy and sure enough, two different sizes. Normally I would rip back past the point of error and reknit with two needles of the same size (it's only about an inch and a half) but instead I'll just leave it.

I look at this picture and realize if I really cracked the whip I could finish this over the long weekend.  Any ideas on how to get my groove back?

  1. Try something small. When I lose my mojo I normally try Toast or something similar which gives me some much needed instant gratification. Your Audrey is lovely :)

  2. It is such a lovely cardigan so far! The ribbing and the color! Maybe you need instant gratification! I know that when I've knitted sweaters, it was really difficult towards the end. Good luck! You knit so beautifully!

  3. Gourmet grilled cheese sounds like a piece of heaven. Yummmm

As for the ennui - I'm with the others, try a quick fix kind of project. Quick to knit, something you can use right away, use a special yarn you've been saving - all those things help me through. And I must need a lot of help, because I've got about a dozen projects going right now!

  4. Just keep doing what you are doing and the mojo will come back when it's ready. Then again maybe it is the cardi that is making you feel stuck. Cast on something different?
Now that grilled cheese...are you kidding me, the cheese is hanging off the plate! That is what I am talking about.

  5. Why not crochet? Granny squares? A quick, colorful and fun project. No need to swatch.
Your cardigan is absolutely gorgeous so far! Love this color.

  7. I'm all about grilled cheese, gourmet or not. I've made my own "gourmet" versions, and grilled cheese never fails!

I know you'll get your groove back. I agree with suggestions of casting on for a new small project. Also, I love the color of your Audrey!

  8. For me, there's nothing as satisfying as a really good grilled cheese sandwich! Your Audrey is looking so beautiful and, yes, you are soooo close. Like Andi said, take your time, it'll come back. But maybe casting on something small and quick might help clear your mind a bit and get you re-energized.

  10. The cardi is gorgeous but don't sweat it, the mojo will come back - probably with a case of cast-on-itis.

  11. Elizabeth Zimmermann in on of her books, said if you can't find 2 needles the same size, 2 of different isn't going to totally blow it. She probably didn't say it in those words, but hey, you'll be just fine!

Knitting is for the love and joy of it. If your mojo isn't there, put it up for a while until you can't stand it anymore, and I guarantee, you'll be knitting like a mad woman~

  12. Hey, I was just wondering where you were! I'm glad you're around but sorry to hear about the loss of mojo. Hopefully it'll return in time. As for the grilled cheese, that sounds FABULOUS. No skeptical eyebrow raises here. ;)
