Socks: What to Do

This week I've been working on a new pair of socks. La Mancha Giants is a free pattern on Ravelry that I think is really pretty and since fair isle is the challenge for July in the Sock Knitters Anonymous group, I decided to give it a go. As you can see, I've knit about half the leg on the first sock. I've never done a fair isle sock but I do know that you probably want to go up a needle size from what you normally would and not to tug the yarn; the looser the better. The problem I'm running into now is that even though I'm only halfway through the leg, I tried it on and I can't get it over my heel. Too tight. I measured my gauge and it's right on.

I'm generally from the school of better-to-reknit-than-not-fit but I'm wondering if my monstrous, swollen, bread loaf feet have anything to do with it. I spent some time blocking these this morning (they still don't fit) so I'm left with few options. Right now I'm thinking of frogging and reknitting from the toe up that way I can try them on (most likely in the morning, pre-swelling) as I go. And I might go up a needle size as well. Or should I just plug along assuming they will eventually fit sometime in January? Any thoughts?

  1. Firstly, they look awesome. Secondly, and this may sound odd, but do you have a friend who has a similar sized foot to you? She could try it on and see how it fits. Thirdly, you will have normal sized feet within 2 weeks max post-pregnancy:)

  3. Last comment removed because I had lots of typos. I'm a bit tired right now!

I like Meg's suggestion, but you still may have to reknit. The deal with colorwork is that it stretches very, very, very little. When you knit a regular sock, the circumference of the leg can be less than your actual leg, because it will stretch when you put it on. A colorwork sock will not stretch because of the floats. So the circumference of the leg needs to be close to your actual leg (and if you have thick ankles, even then getting it over the ankle can be a chore).

  5. I agree...colorwork is a little trickier. I had the same problem when knitting a pair of fair isle socks before--had to frog them and re-knit them so they'd fit on my feet.

  6. I think they look beautiful and I have nothing to offer beyond that, as I've never done colorwork and am still new at socks...

  7. I would make it into a small pillow. Then start a new sock. Don 't frog all of that work!
