Going Away Chicken

If you ask any teacher or student at my school I'm pretty certain most would agree that one of the things that makes our school so special is our outdoor "Learning Lab". This space consists of different outdoor habitats (wetlands!), raised beds for growing (mostly) vegetables, a pumpkin patch, greenhouse, and a chicken coup! The chickens are always a big hit and it's a lot of fun to see our principal in his rainboots tromping around with the kids during Chicken Duty.

As the end of the school year came to a close, I was very sad to find out that our principal would be moving away and leaving our school.  I knew I wanted to make him something special to remember us by so of course I made the only thing logical: a knitted chicken.

The pattern I used was Knit Chickens by Susan B. Anderson. The colorwork chart is from the Ellemeno P blog. I used Spud and Chloe Sweater to knit this chicken and I think it turned out great! I was super excited to give it to him and I think he was both surprised and amused.  I'm very sad to see him go. I feel like he was the the person who saw something in me and gave me a chance and has believed in me and encouraged me to continue to grow as a teacher. I really wish him the best and hope he keeps his chicken as a reminder of his time at our school.
