A Bag for Mom

I finished the bag I had started knitting for my mom for Mother's Day last week. I was basically all done and ready to assemble the bag (you sew the knitted panel onto the felted piece) the first Monday in May. I made a special trip to the LYS that sells sew-on bag handles but is quite a bit out of the way. Of course, when you really need something, a store doesn't have it. The employee at the LYS promised to talk to the owner the following day and see if the purse handles could be special ordered. The owner contacted me the following day and said she would place the order. Great, right? Well, yes and no. I would get the correct purse handles, but this was definitely not going to make it out by Mother's Day. I let my mom know her gift would be a bit delayed and waited. They arrived at the LYS by May 11 but I didn't make it back to the store until the weekend. After having to make a third special trip to an LYS to buy the right color thread, I was finally on my way.

I think it turned out pretty cute. The yarn was picked out by my mom on my last trip to California. At first I thought it might be a bit too fuchsia, but it knitted and felted up quite nicely. She also picked out the cute little ceramic button. It was the first time I had done a knitted bobble and they look so darn cute! I was a bit worried when knitting the panel. I was starting to get through the second (and final) skein of yarn and thought that I might actually run out of yarn. Instead of following the pattern for the panel exactly, I measured the already felted piece, knitted the panel half the length of that, then replicated the number of bobbles and spaces on the second half. I ended up finishing with about two feet of yarn left over. Perfect!

Pattern: Formal Boot Bag by Laura Irwin
Yarn: Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride Worsted in Fuchsia (2 skeins)
Needles: #8 (5mm) for bobble pannel, #11 (8mm) and #13 (9mm) 24" circular
Began: April 18
Finished: May 19
